Bitcoin Evolving Beyond Use as Money

According to a recent Bloomberg report, "Bitcoin isn’t just for buying and selling cupcakes and cameras anymore."

Reporter Olga Kharif writes, "A crop of entrepreneurs, backed by investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and BitAngels, are betting that the technology behind the virtual currency can be used for a range of financial tasks now handled by banks, exchanges, e-commerce providers and other middlemen. "

Heady stuff indeed for anyone who is weighing their go/no decision to bet on Bitcoin actually being in play, other than just a highly risky proposition.

The Telegraph UK – – 3/24/2014

MtGox finds 200,000 Bitcoins in 'forgotten' wallet MtGox, the Tokyo-based digital currency exchange says, 2000,000 Bitcoins were found in an old-format wallet believed to be empty, but checked after the company's bankruptcy filing.

MtGox said on Friday it found 200,000 "forgotten" Bitcoins on March 7, a week after the Tokyo-based digital currency exchange filed for bankruptcy protection saying it had lost about $500 million worth of Bitcoin, nearly all its holdings.

MtGox made the announcement on its website. Online sleuths had noticed the same amount of Bitcoin moving through the crypto-currency exchange after the bankruptcy filing.

The exchange said the Bitcoins were found in an old-format online wallet which it had thought no longer held any Bitcoins, but which it checked again after its bankruptcy filing.

"On March 7, 2014, MtGox Co. Ltd. confirmed that an old format wallet which was used prior to June 2011 held a balance of approximately 200,000 BTC," the statement said.

"For security reasons, the 200,000 BTC which were at first on the 7th moved to online wallets, were moved between the 14th and 15th to offline wallets. These Bitcoin movements, including the change in the manner in which these coins were stored, had been reported to the court and the supervisor by counsels."

Nashville Restaurant First In Country To Accept Bitcoin

According to News Channel 5 reporter Emily Luxen, "Flyte World Dining and Wine on Division Street is currently the only fine dining restaurant in the country to use the new payment system.

"For me, the technology side is really exciting," said Scott Sears, Flyte Co-Owner. "I like the fact we are on the cutting edge."

The restaurant started accepting Bitcoins in December of 2013. Sears said they have already seen a great response.

"Nationally, we find guests in town for conventions will seek out merchants who accept Bitcoin," said Sears. "They are coming to our restaurant specifically for that reason."

Bitcoin, created in 2009, is digital money used through peer to peer technology with no central authority or bank.

Users buy and sell Bitcoin on an exchange and store their currency in a digital wallet.

To pay for a meal at Flyte, customers use an app on their mobile device to transfer Bitcoins from their wallet to Flyte's. A processing company called Coinbase will then convert the transaction from Bitcoin to U.S. dollars. The entire transaction takes just seconds.
